What Upsellr does on Shopify, and what it never does

The rules Upsellr follows when it publishes to your Shopify store: drafts, prices, collections, images and limits.

When Upsellr publishes to Shopify, it follows fixed rules so it never damages your store. Here they are, to know before your first publication.

What Upsellr never touches

  • Prices and stock: prices, compare-at prices, stock and costs are never written. The store keeps its figures.
  • Your content: nothing that belongs to you is deleted. Products, variants, metafields, tags, images and collections stay in place. Upsellr only removes the images and tags it added itself.
  • Automated collections: their rules always decide their products.
  • The product’s Shopify category (Shopify’s standard taxonomy): choose it in Shopify.

What Upsellr does

  • New products as drafts: a product created by Upsellr arrives as a draft. You review it and publish it in Shopify.
  • Categories as collections: your categories become collections only when you click Send to Shopify from the channel’s Categories page. Shopify has no tree: each category becomes a flat collection. A product joins its categories’ collections and never leaves one.
  • Images: on an existing product, the order of the gallery is never changed. A new primary image is added at the end of the gallery, and the log flags it: move it to first place in Shopify. A photo reworked by Upsellr is added next to the original.

Variants and options

  • Shopify accepts at most 3 options per product. A fourth axis is refused.
  • No option is added to a product that already has its variants in Shopify.
  • A new variant is only created on a draft created by Upsellr. On a live product, add it in Shopify with its price: Upsellr will link to it.
  • Images and metafields specific to a variant are not sent.

Good to know

  • Packs: a pack goes out as a simple product. Upsellr does not create a Shopify bundle.
  • Titles: Shopify refuses titles longer than 255 characters.
  • Metafields: a Shopify store accepts 256 product metafield definitions. Beyond that, delete the ones you no longer use in Shopify (Settings > Custom data).
  • Tags: Shopify accepts 250 tags per product.
  • Languages: a language the store does not publish is not written. The store’s primary language must be part of the channel, otherwise the product cannot be created.
